Personal Care

Personal care services are designed to assist individuals with the tasks of daily living that they are no longer able to perform on their own. The goal of personal care services is to help people stay in their homes as long as possible. Personal care is not a medical service and it is not provided by licensed nurses or other medical professionals, but rather by trained caregivers who offer basic assistance with activities such as bathing, grooming, and dressing.

Who may need personal care?

As you navigate the challenges of aging and chronic conditions, personal care services can help you stay safe and comfortable in your own home.

Personal care is for individuals with a chronic condition, disability, or other impairment that makes it difficult to do activities of daily living. It’s also for people who need help with mobility or has difficulty remembering to take their medications.

Some examples of people who may need personal care services are those:

  • Who have chronic illnesses (such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, dementia, or Alzheimer’s disease)
  • Who have difficulties with mobility due to illness or injury
  • Who are recovering from illness or surgery and cannot do everyday tasks on their own (like getting dressed)

Activities of daily living normally performed by personal care aides include:

You probably understand that personal care aides do the things you need help with, but not everyone has a clear grasp of all the services they perform. Personal care aides can help their clients with the activities of daily living (ADLs), or tasks most people usually do for themselves. This can include bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transferring (from a bed to a chair or vice versa), eating, and walking (including exercising and taking medication). In addition to these ADLs, personal care aides can also perform instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) like shopping, light housekeeping, meal preparation, laundry, errands, and transportation.
